Field Notes from the Forest
Back with the mountain gorillas
The forest feels alive in a way no city ever could. The air is thick with moisture, every step cushioned by a tangle of roots and moss (and pretty darn slippery too!). And then comes the moment I’ve been waiting for, first the scent, and then the rustle of leaves that tells me we’re close.
I’m back in Bwindi, home of the mountain gorillas.
Every return here feels like a reunion, not only with the gorillas themselves but with the rhythm of this landscape. There is really nothing like it anywhere else. The mist is real and now that it is the rainy season, it is an almost daily occurrence.
